Match and like boxes.-A shiny, mirror-like surface, of red to brownish-red or violet shades, is produced on copper articles, such as holders or receptacles for matches, cigars and cigarettes, ashtrays, &c. Sheet copper in the desired form is highly polished, heated to a red-heat, and, after cooling, dipped in sulphuric, hydrochloric, or nitric acid.
