Improvements in Apparatus for Abstracting Stones, Metal and other Foreign Matters from Wheat or other Granular Materials.

Washing grain.- In apparatus for separating stones, metal, &c. from wheat or other granular material by washing or sorting by means of upward currents of water, plates or baffles, sloping downwards in opposite directions alternately, are arranged to check the rush of grain, direct the upward currents in diagonal directions, and ensure that there shall be a body of still water for the grain to fall into. Fig. 2 represents a section of the preferred form of apparatus. The grain falls from the hopper B, and, passing between the baffles E in the trunk A, is carried away by the water through the outlets I, while the stones &c. fall into the tank G through the openings D. The tank G is provided with a water inlet near the top, with hand-holes P, and with an outlet J. Preferably, two valves, with a receiving-chamber between them, are attached at J to facilitate the discharge of the stones while the tank is full of water. The openings e, through which the material falls, may be made adjustable by employing sliding plates E movable by means of toothed segments K. The plates E and the sides of the trunk A may be made of glass.
