19,210. Marston, Ltd., J., and Pullinger, T. C. Sept. 7. Motor road vehicles.-A gear case protecting the chain gearing between the driving-shaft and driving- axle, is so constructed and mounted as to adjust itself to the constantly varying relative positions of the two axes. Fig. 4 shows a section on the line y-y in Fig. 2, and Fig. 3 a section through the axle E of the driving-wheels. The driving-wheel B1, having the sprocket-wheel B fixed to it, rotates on the fixed axle E, the end of which is bent slightly downwards, so that the plane of the sprocket-wheel inclines outwards. The gear case is divided into upper and lower parts, the portion surrounding the sprocket-wheel B, having circular openings in each side, which are concentric with the axis, when the case is in place. The edge c of the inner opening is a turning fit around a circular plate D secured to the fixed axle E, and is held lightly between the plate D, leather washer e, and ring f, by screws a passing through slots h in the gear case, which may thus rotate slightly relatively to the plate D. The edge of the outer opening in the gear case is fitted into a U-section continuous ring k, which enters a groove formed between a ring n and a flange m rotating with the sprocket-wheel. At the other end of the gear case, Figs. 2 and 4, a plate H is secured to the fixed flange s by screws t passing through slots in the plate, in order that it may rotate slightly relatively to the flange s. The inner side of the gear case is secured to the plate H by bolts r, which are screwed into lugs and fixed by lock-nuts. These bolts pass through eyepieces m1, which are fixed in slots in the plate H, and may be adjusted in position in the slots when taking up the slack of the chain. Springs q1, surrounding the bolts r, allow slight sideway and tilting movements of the gear case relatively to the plate H.
