Gas - producers; retort furnaces.- In an apparatus for producing poor gas free from tarry matters, of the kind described in Specification No. 7979, A.D. 1904, the retort 5, in which the volatile matters are first distilled from the charge, is completely separated from the surrounding furnace 8 throughout its height. The gaseous products of distillation are led by a nozzle 14 and a pipe 15 from the upper part of the retort to the space below the grate 6. The gases there mix with air and steam, which are introduced by a pipe 12, and the mixture passe; up through the incandescent material above the grate, being finally led away through a pipe 11. The retort 5 discharges into a space 3 below the bottom of the producer, the charge being removed through a door 4 and . introduced into the producer by a charging-hopper 10. Arrangements may be made on the pipe 15 for sampling the products of distillation from the retort, and it may also be arranged so that a part or all of the products of distillation from the retort may be completely ejected from the producer.
