1776. Butterfield, J. C. Jan. 23. Roads and ways, making; asphalt paving.-Consists in means for producing compact and dustless macadamized or like roads with asphalt surfaces. Texas oil is heated by steam to 180‹ or 190‹ F. and is oxidized and agitated by blowing air through it, whereby the volatile compounds are removed. This is carried out in a steam-heated tank which contains a coil of pipe mounted close to the bottom and perforated with trumpet-shaped holes on its underside. Air is forced through the holes and ascends after striking the bottom of the tank. To the oxidized oil is added a solution of asphalt or pitch in Texas oil or benzol until the mixture contains from 10 to 20 per cent. of asphalt, after which it is agitated again by the air blower. 15 to 20 per cent. of water is then added, with 6 per cent. resin, 4 per cent. olein, 4 per cent. soda, and 10 per cent. of a sodium silicate solution at 120‹ Tw. After 30 minutes' blowing, 1 per cent. of À880 ammonia solution is added, and the blowing continued gently, frothing being avoided. A solution of this emulsified asphalt compound is used in place of water during the making of the road. A solution of sodium silicate, about 28‹ Tw., may be applied directly to the roads instead of mixing it with the asphalt solution. In the Provisional Specification, it is stated that a 10 to 20 per cent. solution of calcium chloride is applied to the asphalted surface to react with the sodium silicate.
