26,548. Williams, L. Dec. 6. Ventilating cargoes.-The floors of the cargo spaces of ships are fitted with a grating or false bottom through which air may be forced for ventilating and cooling purposes. The air is cooled by passing it through refrigerating-apparatus. It is then drawn off at the top of the cargo spaces, and returned by fans to be re-circulated through the cargo. The main duct 10, fitted to one bulkhead, discharges right and left to air channels at each side of the vessel, through which it is discharged at regular intervals through the vertical ducts 21, 27, beneath the grating 9, and thence through the cargo. The side air channels are fitted with baffle-doors, as shown. The discharge takes place at the upper part of the cargo space through openings 30 in the ducts 28, 29, these openings being provided with regulating- slides. The ducts 28, 29 unite to form a vertical duct 11, which is in connection with the suction of the fan, the discharge of the fan being in connection with the duct 10. This arrangement may be reversed, the air then entering at the top and leaving at the bottom. Modifications are described in which two or more cargo spaces are ventilated when placed one above the other. Some of the side ducts in these cases pass through the deck to the lower cargo spaces. The horizontal air channels may also be placed one above the other as shown in Fig. 1, instead of next to one another.
