28,563. Partridge, E., and Roberts, W. Dec. 28. Billiards; lawn billiards. - Relates to the construction of fittings which may be placed on a table, or on a floor or lawn, for use in ordinary or lawn billiards. Mallets may be used in playing the latter game. Preferably, the fittings comprise four side bars a, Fig. 1, and two end bars a2, which are each fitted with cushions. The bars are rigidly connected by means of metallic pieces c, c2, which also carry the pockets, and metallic blocks b secured to the ends of the bars. Each piece c, Fig. 3, is formed with vertical depending pieces c1, which fit into recesses b1 in the end blocks b, Fig. 7, and horizontal ribs c3 of the pieces c fit into recesses b3 in the blocks b, the attachment being rendered secure by screws e. The connecting-pieces c2 are similarly secured to the blocks b, and the complete arrangement is adapted to make the bars a very rigid. The cushions consist of tensioned steel bands f covered with felt or other fabric g. The ends of each band f are bent around elastic sleeves h2, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 7, on pins h carried by the blocks b, and each end is attached to a nut k, which can be moved by a bolt i when the tension of the strip f is to be altered. This tensioning- device may be dispensed with, and the strips f may be put under tension and fixed permanently as shown in Fig. 12. The ends of the strips f are passed through slots b2 in the blocks b, and are secured by clamping-pieces l and screw pins m. As a security against loss of tension, a dowel pin p is driven through the strip f into the clamping piece l. To increase the cushioning effect, the inner side of the ends of the felt g may be lined with india-rubber pads r at the parts which contact with the end blocks b. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 12, the ends e3 of the pieces c fit into recesses in the sides of the blocks b. Cushioning-frames without pockets may be constructed in a similar manner to that described for frames with pockets. According to the Provisional Specification, the connecting-pieces c, c2 may be dispensed with, and metallic connecting corner or side blocks are used ; these blocks are provided with pockets or recesses for receiving the ball..The blocks are connected by means of dowels fitting in holes or mortices. The cushion in this case may consist of a rubber band stretched between the ends of the bars, onlet into a recess in the bars, and means may be provided for retaining the ball in the pocket. This form of apparatus may be fitted with studs for securing a canvas covering.
