An Improved Process for the Production of Pure Nitrates from a Mixture of Nitrates and Nitrites.

Nitrates of alkalies, alkaline earths, and metals, obtained by the action of nitrous vapours on alkalies, alkaline earths, or their carbonates &c., are purified from nitrite by treatment with nitric acid. The calculated amount of nitric acid is added to the boiling solution of nitrate and nitrite and the boiling continued. The escaping nitrous gases are returned to the absorption apparatus where the alkali &c. has been treated. Or current of air may be passed through the cold mixture of nitrate, nitrite, and nitric acid instead of boiling. The remaining solution contains pure nitrate requiring no further treatment. Nitric acid required in the above process can be obtained by treating the nitrous gases with water.
