4379. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. March 2. Regulating.- Translating-devices, such as arc lamps, are supplied with current the voltage of which increases a its volume diminishes, without the use of a series resistance. A motor 4 and generator 5, coupled or geared together, are connected in series across the supply mains 1, 2, the generator being also connected to the lamp 3. Series field windings 10, 11 assist the shunt windings in the motor 4, but oppose them in the generator 5, so that as the current through the lamp &c. diminishes, the motor speeds up, and the excitation of the generator is at the same time increased. The shunt windings 6, 7 of the two machines are connected in series or parallel-across the mains. According to the Provisional Specification, these windings may be connected across the terminals of the machines themselves; also the motor may alone be connected to the supply mains, the generator circuit being separate.
