18,506. Bean, W. Sept. 13. Propelling and steering submarine vessels.-The screw propeller 5 is mounted so that it may be moved in both horizontal and vertical directions. The tail shaft 6 is connected to the motor shaft by a universal joint 7, and is supported in a bearing 8 carried by the frame 11, which is pivoted co-axially with the universal joint 7. For swinging the propeller in a horizontal plane, an arm 25, integral with the frame 11, is moved by the rod 26 from within the vessel. By this means, the vessel is steered. The bearing 8 is capable of vertical movement by means of the rod 19, which passes through the axis of the frame 11 and is operated by the screw 23. The vertical movement of the propeller enables the degree of submersion of the submarine vessel to be varied without the use of diving- rudders or ballast tanks.
