Cleansing-compositions.-A composition containing an oxidizing-agent together with a. caustic alkali is used as a solvent for lead and alloys of lead, and more particularly for removing lead fouling from gun-barrels. Persulphates, especially the ammonium salt, perborates, and hypochlorites are mentioned as suitable oxidizing-agents. The composition is applied in solution, the muzzle end of the gun-barrel being closed and the barrel filled with the liquid. As ammonium persulphate is unstable in alkaline solution, the liquid is made up immediately before use, tablets containing weighed quantities of per sulphate together with a little ammonium carbonate being provided for this purpose.
