Electric railways.-A telpherage system has separate supply and control circuit conductors with short insulated sections at loading and unloading stations, and the various motions of the telpher are effected by a manually-operated starting- switch which closes the supply circuit through a suitable resistance, and also the circuit operating the controller barrel. The telpher runs upon a rail A acting as a return conductor, and is provided with traversing and hoisting motors B, C, with a brake magnet F included in their circuits. The power and control circuits are fed by trollies H, J engaging conductors M, N, having short insulated sections 0, P at the stations, adapted to be energized from the lead L by a starting- switch Q. The cars stop at these stations when the starting- switch is in the oft position. The controller barrel carried by the car, the contacts of which are shown in development, is provided with a ratchetwheel T actuated by a pawl attached to the plunger of a solenoid E, which is energized when the starting-switch is moved to the on' position. By this means, the controller barrel may be moved step by step into the various positions for completing the necessary circuits of the traversing and hoisting motors B, C, respectively. In the circuit of the hoisting-motor is a switch G which is opened when the load is fully hoisted.
