Slipping of wheels, preventing. - Apparatus of the type in which one or more struts are used carrying disks in contact with the ground to prevent side-slip in motor road vehicles is constructed so as to avoid excessive pressure on the road when the vehicle is running normally. On the rear axle, or on the frame, and on the inner side of each driving-wheel, a block A is fixed through which a bar B slides. To the lower end of the bar B, a shank B1 is pivoted in such a manner that it may only move through a small angle, a spring b1 keeping it in its normal or vertical position. To the upper end of the part B1, a bar b2 is secured having teeth b3 corresponding to those of a rack a fixed to the block A; the lower end carries the disk C. The latter is kept in contact with the road either by the weight of the moving parts or by means of springs a1, but, when the vehicle skids, the teeth b3 engage the rack, and the parts A, B, B1 act as a rigid strut. In some cases, the rack and teeth may be dispensed with, the frictional grip of the bar B due to side pressure being utilized. The disk C may have a series of grooves c, or it may be built up of separate disks alternately of steel and lead, or of carborundum and raw hide or other suitable material. Bushings of hard rubber or vulcanized fibre may be used, and means may be provided for lifting the disks clear of the ground.
