Slipping of wheels, preventing.-To prevent sideslip in motor road vehicles, two or more flexible bands, such as chains, wire ropes, &c., are suspended one on each side of the frame so as to hang just clear of the inside or outside edges of the driving- wheels, in order that the wheels may mount the bands when side-slip commences. Bands may be placed on both sides of each driving-wheel, but preferably they are only suspended on the inside. In Fig. 1, the endless band a is shown supported by pulleys b so as to contact with the ground a little in front of the driving-wheel, a trough c or its equivalent preventing the upper part from sagging. Guide-pulleys d maybe employed to keep the rope in the correct position. To raise the band off the ground, the position of one of the pulleys b may be varied by mechanism operated by the driver. Fig. 4 shows a modification, in which a length of band is supported from brackets s. A spring e may be interposed near the forward end to prevent undue strain and to assist in pulling the chains from under the wheels after skidding, a check band f being used if desired to limit the extension. In this form, the band may be raised by means of a flexible connexion attached to it. According to the Provisional Specification, the pulleys b in front of the driving-wheels may be sprocket-wheels, and may be driven from the engine.
