Brakes.-A device for holding up the hand levers of railway-wagon brakes comprises a dependent member A pivoted at B' to the underframing of the wagon so as to swing in the plane of the handlever C. A pair of catches F, G are pivoted to the member A, the upper provided with two dependent horns F1, F2 and the lower catch with two upper horns G', G2 and a lower one G3. The horns F1, G3 tend always to rest against a rib A 3 which projects from the member A. The handlever C is provided with a stud C' which, in the 'off' position, rests, between the upper horns of the catch G, as shown. To apply the brakes, the hand-lever is first raised, when the stud, acting on the face F2, F3 of the catch F, pushes the member A to the left sufficiently to allow the horn G3 to be passed in the subsequent downward movement of the lever. In raising the lever to take off the brakes, the stud trips the horn G1, and, further upward movement being resisted by the horn F1, the lever is dropped when the stud is caught in its original position by the catch G. A retaining-strap D is provided. The member A may alternatively be mounted to slide in an horizontal direction.
