Toothpicks.-Quills for use in the manufacture of toothpicks are protected from the corrosive or softening influence of water &c. by coating them with a protective covering, paint, enamel, &c. applied in any suitable manner, chemically, electrolytically, or mechanically. The quills are first hardened by damping or soaking in water or dipping in a solution of sulphate of iron and then heating, after which they may be covered with a composition consisting of organic or inorganic substances, or a mixture of both, for example copal varnish and metallic powder. When coated by electrolysis, they are first covered with a metallic paint or with an adhesive and copper dust, after which copper, nickel, or other metal is deposited thereon.
