An Improved Automatic Guard Device for Ironing-machines.

Guards.-In an automatic safety device for ironing-machines of the reciprocating-table type, the displacement of the guard plate causes the collapse of a jointed bar, the members a, a' of which, when alined, are capable of transmitting the movements of the foot-lever to the strike bar. The collapse of the jointed bar releases the strike bar which thereupon moves and reverses the machine. When pressure on the treadle and the guard plate is removed, the device is automatically reset. The members a, a' are jointed together at a2 and pivoted respectively to arms c, e1, the former of which is fixed to a shaft d connected with the strike-bar, while the other is loose upon the shaft. The foot-lever is also mounted loosely upon the shaft and, when depressed, comes into contact with a projection e2 of the arm e1. The motion of the foot-lever is thus conveyed through the jointed bar and arm c to the shaft d and the strike bar. When the guard plate is actuated, the Bowden wire x pulls on the lever f pivoted to the arm e and so forces the members a, a1 outwards until they collapse, whereupon the strike bar is released and the machine is reversed. By liberating the guard plate and foot-lever, the spring b attached to the plate c and to the joint at a2 replaces the members a, a1 in alinement.
