13,751. Orfilo, C. S. y, and Schultz, E. E. July 31. Cut-outs.-Relates to a cut-out device for use in connection with overhead conductors with or without guard wires. The cut-out is designed to operate in case of breakage of the conductor or guard wire, or in case of short-circuiting due to telegraph &c. wires, or in case of excessive currents. A magnetic cut-out is fitted in the main circuit, and has two windings, one for overload in series with the circuit and the other a fine wire winding connected to an electromagnetic balanced controller. Fig. 2 shows one arrangement, in which g is the arm of the cut-out held up against a spring by the pawi. v is the electromagnet having the two windings, one in series with the conductor x1 fed from the feeder. The guard wire u is connected to the distant end of the conductor x1, through a resistance x11, and also through one coil of the controller with the fine winding n11; the other coil q of the controller is connected to the conductor x1, and to earth or to the return wire. In normal working the controller is balanced, but in case of disturbance one of the coils p or q will be energized and Lhe circuit through n11 be completed at m or m1. Fig. 4 shows the construction of the magnetic cutout. The arm G is held against the action of the spring A' hy a pawl L', which is raised through the agency of a rod J when the armature L is attracted.
