14,607. Rose, S. A. M., and Hennedy, C. F. July 9. Signalling parting of trains ; signalling and communicating on trains.-Relates to electricallyactuated devices for locking railway and the like carriage doors, in which the main circuit for locking all the doors is not completed until the last door is properly shut, whereupon the release of the engine-starting mechanism takes place simultaneously with the giving of an audible signal through the closing of an auxiliary circuit, and in which a second audible signal is provided to give instantaneous notification of any interruption of the main circuit. All the door fastenings are connected in series in the main circuit, which also includes a switch 44 for unlocking the doors and the solenoids 29 of the signalling-device as shown in Fig. 5, in which the apparatus is in the 'off ' position of the starting-lever 22 and with the doors unlocked. Before the lever 22 can be moved over to the left into the 'on' position, the main circuit 19 must be closed by shutting each door and closing the switch 44, thereby energizing the solenoids 29, which by attracting their cores 31 withdraw the bolt 32 connected therewith from the sliding bar 24, which is connected by a link 23 with the starting-lever 22. Simultaneously with the release of the starting-lever, the circuit 36 of the bell 21 is completed through contacts 41, the bar 24, and contacts 27, 37, 34, 35, thereby giving the driver notice that the starting-lever is released. Fig. 6 shows the position of the mechanism in the running position. Should the switch 44 be opened or the circuit 19 broken through any cause, the spring contacts 34 fall into contract with the spring contact 40, thereby completing the circuit 38 to the bell 39 through the contacts 34*, 28, the rod 24, and contact 41, and giving the driver an audible signal.
