Doors, locking automatically and simultaneously.- Relates to electrically - operated locking-devices for the doors of tramcars, railway carriages, &c. The poles a of two electromagnets b arranged in the door frame attract a lever c, when energized, the lever taking into grooves or notches cut in the poles. When the lever is attracted, a horn-shaped part c1 takes over a spring-controlled latch e arranged on the drop or other door t, so as to secure the door in the closed position. The latch permits the door to be closed even when the lever c is in the locking position. When the circuit is broken, the lever c is withdrawn by its own weight or by means of a spring, thereby releasing the door. The hook c' may be made of brass, and the lever may take against brass screws r at the bottom of the grooves in the poles a. In another arrangement, a bolt is drawn within a magnet coil, when the circuit is closed, to lock the latch, and is returned to the unlocked position by a spring when the circuit is broken. On electric railways, the line current is utilized for the locking-mechanism, and in other railways, accumulators are employed. The opening and closing of the circuit is effected by a switch under the control of the guard or driver, or it may be effected by the operation of the brake lever. One switch may control the locking-mechanism for one or more of the carriages. In electric cars, in cases of de-railing, shortcircuiting, &c., the circuit is broken and the doors are released.
