21,078. Dayol, J. M., and Schmitt, A. C. M. Oct. 17. Brakes.-A tramcar or like vehicle brake, which is applied by rotating a vertical shaft, is released by a pedal H which first unclutches the upper part A of the shaft from the part B connected to the brakes to prevent the operating-handle on the part A from flying round when the brakes are taken off. A clutch sleeve P can slide, but not rotate, upon the part A, under the action of a spring O, in a sleeve N which is supported by an arched standard J bolted to the base-plate D and platform C. A companion clutch sleeve Q is in one with the part B and a ratchet-wheel R. When the part A is rotated to apply the brakes, the sleeves P, Q remain in gear, so that the part B is also rotated. On depression of the pedal H, the fork I first lifts the sleeve P out of engagement with the sleeve Q, and then a bevelled part Y on the pedal lever engages a bevelled part X on an arm V and moves a spring- controlled pawl S out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel R to release the brake. A safety catch Z can be made to bear upon the pawl to prevent an unauthorized person from operating the brake. A plate a, adapted to bear a trade mark, closes a hole for lubricating the sleeves P, Q.
