16,376. Prince, T. Aug. 4. Kilns.-A brick kiln is arranged so that it can be used with an up-draught for drying and with a down-draught for burning. The construction also enables the heating of different parts of the kiln to be effectively regulated during burning. The kiln floor is formed with inlet perforations i in the middle and with damper-controlled inlet openings k in the solid side portions. Recessed damper-controlled outlet flues l in the walls lead to a main exhaust flue a below. During drying the products of combustion pass s into the chamber through all the openings in the floor, and out through holes in the roof, the wall flues l being closed. For burning, the openings in the roof and the solid portions of the floor are closed, and the products of combustion pass out through some or all of the wall flues l to the main exhaust flue. To direct the hot gases to the best advantage solid walls of green brick should be built down the middle of the kiln and along the junction of the perforated solid portions of the floor, the former extending nearly to the roof, and the latter to above the tops of the recessed flues. The arches g, forming the flues for the furnace gases and the supports for the floor, are constructed of two semicircles of fire-brick, the inner of which can be renewed when necessary. Slack coal may be fed on to the fires through openings f. The various dampers are manipulated through the sight-holes n.
