Improvements in Kilns for Drying and Burning Bricks, Tiles, or the like

Kilns.-A continuous kiln for drying, burning, and annealing bricks, tiles, &c. consists of a number of chambers 9, Fig. 2, having firegrates 14, and separated by division walls 8 in which are openings 10, controlled by dampers 11, for establishing c o mmunication between the adjacent chambers. Hot air is supplied below the grates 14 from hot-air flues 5, 13, Figs. 2, 3, and 4, the supply being controlled by dampers 16, and cold air for cooling purposes or for combustion may be supplied below the grate through a flue 17 communicating with the outer air by means of an inlet controlled by a damper 18. Cold air may also be supplied below the grate through passages 19, 20, Figs. 2: and 3. A passage 23 allows air to pass above the grate in the event of the latter becoming clinkered. Fuel is supplied to the grates or chambers through firing-holes 6. By suitably manipulating the dampers, the waste heat from the burning-chamber may be led into an adjacent chamber, and the heat from the cooling-chambers may be led to the hot-air flue 5 and thence to a chamber containing green articles, and the resulting steam and the like may be led through passages 7 to flues 4, 3 leading to the chimney.
