24,396. Johnson, H. W. Nov. 13. Stoppers, vacuum-closing.-Bottles, tins, &c. are provided with an inclined rim B, Fig. 1, and a correspondingly-shaped stopper D. A ridge C is formed in eitber the stopper or the rim, and a corresponding depression in the other member. Further, a space E is provided so that when a ring of cement F melts it fills this space. The melting-point of the cement is so fixed that by the time cooking or sterilizing is finished the cement is first extracted, melted, or a slightly higher temperature may be used at the end of the cooking. During the operation, steam &c. escapes by slits H, Fig. 3, if these are provided, which are afterwards filled by the cement. Fig. 4 shows a similar construction for an internal stopper.
