Appliance for the Rapid Modelling of Maps in Relief for Educational and Demonstration Purposes.

Maps. - Relief maps are modelled in sand by the aid of outline maps on which the highlands are shown by contour lines or by triangles of varying height cut along two sides and bent up along the third side into a vertical position. The outline map d is placed upon slips of paper a on a table &c., and, when contour lines are used, duplicate contours c of paper, wood, &c., are placed over the contour lines on the map, slips of paper b being interposed between the map and the contours c. Sand is sprinkled upon the contours c to a proper depth, the depth corresponding to the contours being indicated by a scale of elevations printed on the map. On removing the slips b, a relief model of the mountain mass is left. Sand is then lightly sprinkled over the whole map and the slips a removed. When the triangles are used, damp sand, or, according to the Provisional Specification, clay or other easily - moulded substance, is banked up on each side of the triangles.
