Paper - carriages ; carriage - shift mechanism ; letter-spacing mechanism. -Relates to means for guiding the paper-carriage in the case-shift movement, and to the mounting of the carriage feed-rack. The carriage is of the kind in which an impression surface 11 and a paper roll 8 are mounted on a frame 4, which bears on an abutment 12 carried by a tierod 13, which rides on slides 15 and may be adjusted in length. (1) The carriage is mounted by balls on a rail 30 secured to arms 28 which are secured to a rock-shaft journaled in arms 23 on the tie-rod 13. The carriage is provided with a rail 17, to which is adjustably secured a rail 18, the rail 30 being grooved to receive balls 32, which engage a groove in the rail 17 and a curved flange 22 on the rail 18. (2) Shift mechanism comprising a lever 40 is connected by a rod 37 to the rail 30, the rod being provided with a ball 38, which is socketed in the lever 40, and a ball 35, which is socketed in plates 34, 36 on a bracket 33 secured to the rail 30. The carriage is balanced by an elliptical spring 41 having an adjusting-screw 42. When the carriage is shifted up or down, the rail 30 describes an arc, but the carriage is guided vertically by the abutment 12, the arrangement of the balls 32 and the flange 22 permitting the carriage to tilt relatively to the rail 30. The arms 28 are secured to each end of the rail 30 and compel an equal movement of both ends of the carriage. (3) The carriage is traversed for letter-spacing on the rail 30 by means of an escapement pinion 45, which engages a feedrack 44 mounted on the carriage. To permit the rack to remain in mesh when the carriage is shifted, the rack is secured to arms 47 pivoted at 48 to brackets 50 on the carriage. The rack rides on a roll 51 journaled on the tie-rod 13 ; when the carriage is shifted, the swinging arms 47 permit the rack to remain in mesh.
