By means of a cap 14, Fig. 1, and a pipe 15, the central hole 11 of the piston-rod communicates with the casing 16 of a piston-valve 17, which has an annular 'groove 18 and is raised and lowered by a rod 26, a bell-crank lever, and a cam on the tappet-shaft. Compressed air from a suitable source enters the valve casing through a pipe 19, and passes to the .pipe 15 by way of the groove 18, an inlet 20, and a passage 21. The cylinder is moved towards the centre of the loom, and is retarded at 'the beginning of its stroke by the partial vacuum produced in the sleeve 9, and at the end of its stroke by the pressure of the air confined in the cylinder 12 round the rod 10 when a hole 29 in the cylinder has passed on to the piston-head. When the shuttle returns, it moves the cylinder back to its normal position, the valve 17 being raised to open an outlet 22, which is provided with a screw 27 for controlling the exhaust of the air.
