2119. Debauche, J. H. Jan. 27. Presses, cylinder and piston; safety devices. -A control device for hydraulically - operated apparatus such as Bessemer converters comprises an auxiliary cylinder in which the fluid under pressure before being admitted to the working cylinder is obliged to move a loaded control piston, which, in moving, operates an auxiliary distributor and allows the pressure fluid to enter the working cylinder. The device is placed between the principal distributor and the hydraulic piston to be operated, so that, in the event of a rupture of the pipes &c. conveying the fluid, the hydraulic operating-piston is locked in position. Fig. 1 shows the application of the apparatus to a Bessemer converter. The piston 3 working in the cylinder 4 is fed with fluid through the ports 5, 6, the fluid being led from the accumulator &c. 11 through the main distributor 8, pipes 9, 10, and the control device 7. The control device is shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The fluid enters the ports 16, 17 from the pipes 9, 10, and by means of the passages 19, may raise either of the loaded pistons 12, 13, which, by means of the levers 23, actuate the valve 26 to admit the fluid from the pipes 9, 10 to the ports 5, 6. Each piston is loaded with a force slightly smaller than the fluid pressure. The rods of the pistons 12, 13 engage moreover at the end of their strokes with adjustable dash-pistons 32 resting on air-cushions to prevent shock to the control pistons.
