A Method of Improving the Road-bed of Railway Tracks.

Foundations.-Consists in increasing the resistance of the subsoil by employing vertical rammers acting by their own weight, suitable materials being incorporated in the ballast. The rammers are actuated by motors mounted on a truck and adjusted at suitable distances from the axis of the track. The layer of ballast is bored between two sleepers, or through openings in the sleepers, and earth mixed with sand, ashes, or gravel is introduced and rammed down. This ramming may be utilized to raise the level of the track at adjacent points. A mixture of earth with sand and fine gravel is then introduced to cover up the traces of the boring.
