Postmarking-machines; printing-surfaces; inking-apparatus.-In order to prevent fraudulent use of a postal franking or like machine, the printing-surface is formed in two parts, one sliding within the other, both being spring-controlled and operated by separate cam-devices. They may be inked by a pad having two portions, and operated by a cam to swing horizontally into position for inking the parts of the printing-surface in different colours and with different kinds of ink. The stamping operations take place simultaneously, but the main die is depresed slightly in advance of the supplementary die. The main die 2 is depressed at suitable times against the action of a spring 4, by a cam 9, to engage with the ink pad 25 and then the paper. The supplementary die, which slides within the main die, is similarly operated by a cam 15 and lever 19, acting on a pin 20 projecting from the die through a slot in the shank of the main die. The pad 25 is preferably formed in two parts a, b, having inks of different kinds and colours for the two dies. It is swung horizontally to co-operate with the dies at the right times, by a cam 30 and a spring 28 on the pivot 23 of the arm 27 carrying the pad, and is turned to present fresh surfaces each time of using by a spring 31 pressed against it at certain times by the cam 30.
