Extracting sugar.-Sugar cane is shredded to reduce it to a mixture of granular pith and woody fibre, and is then dried by gases at a high temperature, say 1000‹ F., the mass, or portions thereof, being removed before becoming too hot or dry. The pith and fibre may be baled separately or together. The drying may be effected in two stages, first by high-temperature combustion-gases and then by air passed over steam-pipes. The drier may consist of an inclined rotary cylinder having internal lifting-devices, and the current of gas is preferably so controlled as to transport the pith. This separation may be assisted by sifting. A constant temperature may be maintained by thermostatically controlling the air supplied for combustion, the air mixed with the combustion gases, and the automatic stoker &c.
