13,376. Kestner, J. F. P. Jan. 15, [Convention date]. Cleaning machinery pneumatically. - Relates to the stripping and cleaning of the drum and doffer cylinders of carding-engines by suction nozzles which travel backwards and forwards on rods having crossing screw-threads, and consists in means whereby (1) the communication between the suction nozzles and the vacuum chamber or pump is automatically closed at the end of the outward or active travel; (2) the rotation of the screw-threaded rods is automatically stopped at the end of the return travel, whereupon the nozzles come to rest at the place from which they started; and (3) the working parts, particularly the screw-threaded rods, are protected from dust and dirt. Suction nozzles 3, 31 for the drum and doffer cylinders respectively are connected by flexible tubes to a vacuum pipe 5 provided with cut-off valves 6, 61 normally held open by manually-operated levercatches 18 against the action of closing-springs. The nozzles slide on tubes 10 slotted to receive pins 11, Fig. 2, which engage the screw-threaded rods 12. (1) At the end of the outward or active travel, arms 17 on the nozzles depress the levers 18, whereupon the valves 6, 61 are closed by their springs. (2) At the end of the return travel, rollers 22 carried by.tubes 21 secured to the nozzles abut against driving-pulleys 13 and, overcoming springs 24, disengage the pulleys from lugs 15 on the screwed rods, whereupon the nozzles come to rest. Re-engagement is effected by means of a hand-wheel. (3) Each slotted tube is surrounded by a pair of extensible air-tight coverings consisting of a spiral spring 26 enclosed in a tube of fabric 27 secured to a collar 28 on the tube and to the nozzle.
