[Addition to 13,376/12.] Cleaning machinery pneumatically. - T h e apparatus described in the parent Specification is modified as described in Specification 13,377/12, by mounting the suction nozzles 7, 6 for the drum and doffer upon a single carrier, so that the drum and doffer are stripped during opposite traversing movements. According to the present invention, the three-way cock for putting the nozzles into and out of communication with the source of vacuum is replaced by a form of piston valve, and the existing brackets on a carding- engine are utilized for supporting the suction mechanism. The invention further consists in a form of safety plate 25 which normally covers the slots in the casings through which the nozzles protrude when in operation, and is raised by contact with a nozzle, and also in the provision of a ball 30, roller, or brush at the front side of the nozzle 7 for preventing bad cotton raised by the nozzle from the drum from being transferred to the doffer. The suction mechanism is mounted on the existing brackets 20 of the carding-engine by the aid of bolts 21 screwed into bosses 23 cast on members 24 carrying the traversing-screw 1 and the tubular guide 3 of the carrier 4. The nozzles 6, 7 communicate with an open cylinder 8, which contains a piston valve 9 and is connected by a pipe 10 to the source of vacuum. The piston is provided with through-ports 5, 14 for putting the nozzles into communication with the pipe 10, and is operated by the engagement of extensions 15 on the piston with stops 17 on the members 24. The safety plates 25 are hinged to the casings, and fall under the action of springs 27 or a counterweight 29 as they are released by the nozzles.
