[Addition to 13,376/12.] Cleaning machinery pneumatically.-The apparatus described in the parent Specification is modified by mounting the suction nozzles for the drum and doffer upon a single carrier. The nozzles are controlled by a single three - way valve, and the drum and doffer are stripped during opposite traversing movements, the drum preferably being stripped during the first or outward movement. The drum and doffer are also provided with safety plates which normally cover the portions of the casings through which the nozzles protrude when in operation, the plates being raised to uncover these portions by the abutment of the nozzles against them. Suction nozzles 6, 7 for stripping a drum 1 and doffer 2 respectively are mounted on a carrier 9 provided with sockets 12, 11, whereby the carrier is guided nn a rod 10 during its traversing movement upon the rod 15 with crossing screw-threads. The tube 14 surrounding the rod is provided with flexible extensible coverings for preventing the entry of dust &c., as described in the parent Specification. The three-way valve 5, which controls the communication between the nozzles and the source of vacuum, is provided with arms 20, 25 which are operated by engagement with a tappet 21, and inclined contact members 24, 26. The tappet opens the nozzle 6 to the vacuum at starting; the member 24 closes the nozzle 6 and opens the nozzle 7 to the vacuum at the end of an outward traversing movement, and the member 24 closes both nozzles to the vacuum at the end of the return movement. The carrier is started by a hand-wheel 22 and stopped after completing a double traverse in the manner described in the parent Specification. The safety-plate 31 which normally covers the nozzle opening in the casing of the drum is raised to disclose the opening by the abutment of the nozzle against inclined projections 29 on the plate, which is provided with slots 28 for guiding purposes. The stripping-apparatus may be adapted to be transported from one carding-engine to another.
