Vaporizers, external.-In the generation of oil gas suitable for use in internal-combustion engines, a mixture of liquid fuel and air or oxygen is injected under pressure into and partially burned in a chamber, so that a combustible vapour is obtained, which, although capable of re-condensation, is free from excess of liquid fuel. A float chamber 26 supplied with fuel from a tank 27 feeds the fuel to an injector and atomizer 15, which is fed with compressed air from a reservoir 29 and forces the mixture of fuel and air into the partial-com- ..bustion chamber 11. The air or oxygen is admitted at a rate less than would suffice to effect complete combustion of the fuel, and the fuel spray produced is sufficiently fine to permit of combustion being initiated without preliminary heating of the chamber, such partial combustion being maintained without the employment of an independent source of flame, a sparking-plug 23 being used for starting purposes only. The partially burning mixture strikes against baffles 24 to effect a thorough mixing, and passes through a layer 25 of wire gauze which prevents the flame of the ignited mixture from passing to the outlet pipe 12. The outlet pipe is provided with a safety-valve 13 and an airadmission valve 14 having an adjustable spring so as to enable the valve to open when the pressure within the pipe 12 falls. A supplementary supply of air and also water or steam or a mixture of water and steam may be introduced into the partial combustion chamber.
