398,037. Oil gas. ROSIER, C. A., 1004, St. Nicholas Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Oct. 6, 1932, No. 27854. [Class 55 (ii).] A gaseous fuel is obtained from oil and air or steam by separately heating the oil so as to vaporize and gasefy it in the presence of a catalyst, the air or steam being separately heated and then mixed with the gasefied oil while in a heated state. Liquid fuel is fed under pressure through valve 22 into a compartment 17 communicating through holes 19b with an upper compartment 18 in which expansion takes place, and leading by pipe 15 and valve 29 to a mixing chamber 31. The tubular baffle 19 is made of nickel, platinum, palladium, copper, or brass, and acts catalytically on the oil vapour. The air or steam under pressure enters a jacket 36 by a pipe 35 and passes by a pipe 32 to the mixing chamber 31. Heat is supplied electrically by a heating element 40 supported in an extension 14a by an insulated base 43, the air being preheated, and the oil vaporized before reaching the mixing chamber 31. The gaseous mixture passes through an elongated nozzle 39 and passages 39a into the intake pipe 10 which may lead to an internal-combustion engine. An automatic valve R prevents back flow due to fluctuation of the load.
