Tanks and containers. -A settling - chamber for the purification of waste water comprises compartments b, b1, b11 arranged to form a continuous spiral channel through which liquid supplied to a central preliminary chamber a passes to an outlet at the circumference. Annular apertures at the bottom of the partitions allow sediment to slide down the bottom d into a chamber below. As shown in Fig. 4, the apertures are made in the floor instead of in the partitions, and angle-irons p are provided below to prevent mud from rising from the sediment chamber. The part d and the partitions c are supported from the sloping bottom h' by brackets m and an angle-iron n. A modification is described in which the apparatus instead of being substantially circular is elongated in horizontal section. With the apparatus shown in Fig. 2a, the sediment from the chamber a and the compartments b, b1 passes into a chamber w provided with an arrangement of hanging rods q which promote the separation of grease. The grease rises into the channel x to join the upper liquid from the compartment b1 and is retained by an annular trough r, the liquid outlet s being below the surface level. The sediment from the chamber w passes to the chamber c.
