Method for clarifying waste water containing easily degradable or absorbable components comprises treating municipal waste water in aeration basins (8, 9) and optionally secondary settling basins (10 -12). The slurry produced is mixed with the waste water containing easily degradable or absorbable components in a contact basin (15) and oxygen is optionally added. Biomass is separated from the treated water and recycled to the aeration basins. An Independent claim is included for apparatus for carrying out a process as described above.
