[Cognate Application, 12,708/14.] Couplings, non-automatic.-The pin A of a shackle for colliery trams is pivoted at a to the upper limb of the shackle, and the lower portion of its rear edge is curved as shown at b to allow of coupling and uncoupling without an excessive longitudinal movement in relation to the eye of the draw-bar e of the adjacent vehicle. To prevent disengagement when the rear vehicle overruns the forward one, a hook t may be provided on the pin to engage the rounded end k of the draw-bar, or the pin may be formed with a hooked end d to grip the part p of the draw-bar. In a modification, such disengagement is prevented by a sleeve mounted by a longitudinal slot on the cross-pin f of the shackle so that it is pushed towards the pin A by the link h when the vehicles overrun. In a further modification, the pin A is prevented from rising beyond a certain position by a spring. Fig. 7 shows a modified construction in which the shackle is formed from a continuous strip of metal bent to shape, the pin A being pivoted at E between the free ends of the strip. The shackle is strengthened by a pin with split ends passed through the holes H.
