Converting rotary into reciprocating motion; converting reciprocating into rotary motion.-Relates to hypocycloidal t o o t h e d gearing for converting rotary into straight-line reciprocating motion, or vice versa, the rolling wheel being so driven by epicyclic gearing that the rotations and reciprocations are unequal in number. Applications to the driving of reciprocating pump rods, or of a rotary shaft from the piston of an engine are referred to. The fixed wheel 2 is secured to the frame F and is engaged by a pinion 3 of half its diameter secured to a fly-wheel 4 carried on a pin 13 in a rotary cage 11, 12. A stud 5 on a reciprocating part 6 is secured in the flywheel opposite the pitch circle of the pinion 3. The cage 11, 12 is driven from a pinion 20 on the rotary shaft 7 concentric with the wheel 2 by planetary gearing 21, 23, 24 carried by the cage, the pinion 24 gearing with the fixed wheel 2. As the shaft 7 rotates, the stud 5 moves along a diameter of the wheel 2 with simple harmonic motion. The cage 11, 12 may be carried on a sleeve on the shaft 7. Balance weights 30, 31 are provided on the fly-wheel and cage.
