Discharging.-In a vertical furnace for hardening, annealing, tempering, &c., having a bottom door r supported on rails t, which can be lowered so that the door can be run laterally from beneath the heating-chamber, the rails are supported at a number of points, for example by end links u, operated by gearing v and a quadrant w for giving a parallel motion to the rails. The door is formed to provide a seal x, and guides z prevent lateral movement during the lowering of the rails. The operating-mechanism is enclosed within an airtight casing, and a dealing-member 3, coacting with an oil tank 6 for tempering &c., is provided as described in Specification 102,243.
