Hydrogen.-In the manufacture of hydrogen by passing steam over heated iron, the iron oxide produced is reduced in two stages; firstly, by means of previously used water gas which has been dried and condensed, termed secondary gas, and secondly, by means of fresh water gas, termed primary gas, which may afterwards be reused as secondary gas. The second operation may be of longer duration than the first, and the primary gas used at the commencement of the second operation may be passed away without being utilized as secondary gas.
