141,451. Evans, D. Feb. 10, 1919. Maps; relief representations.-A metal or other plate having one or more recesses or holes corresponding to the outline of a country or other subject is used in conjunction with plastic material, such as plasticine or permodelle, for making maps or other representations in relief. Fig. 1 shows a plate a having a recess b filled with plastic material c. Adjoining countries d, islands e, and lines of latitude and longitude f may be printed, drawn, or otherwise permanently formed on the surface of the plate a; or islands and other features may be represented by auxiliary recesses or projections. A recessed plate may alternatively be used for forming a relief representation in plastic material contained in a shallow tray or other carrier; the recess may have subsidiary recesses or projections for marking towns, mountain ranges, rivers, railways, and lines of latitude or longitude. A holed plate may be similarly used and may be left in position and secured by springs or other fastenings. A recessed plate may be formed with upstanding ribs outlining the recesses. Accessories for use with the plates include beads for representing towns, wires, cords, and ribbons for representing rivers and railways, and pieces of glass, metal, rubber, celluloid, &c. for representing lakes, mountains, &c. A holed plate may be provided with wires, strings, &c. representing lines of latitude and longitude; or the lines may be formed on the surface of the plastic mass by means of a flexible metal or other strip.
