143,013. Cooper, P. A. May 3, 1919. Vehicular lanterns.-In a vehicle head-light or head-lamp, a semicircular mirror or reflecting surface h, Fig. 1, is provided upon, or adjacent to, the upper half of the front glass so as to reflect the upwardly-directed rays from the electric bulb c or other light source back on to the parabolic reflector b, from which they are again reflected and intensify the downwardly projected beam. The mirror may be plane, rounded, or spherical, or consist of a half-lens silvered on one side. If the light source is situated between the parabolic reflector and its focus, the mirror is concave, with its centre of curvature not farther from the lamp than the virtual origin of the beam. The glass g and semicircular mirror h may be assembled together in a circumferential groove in the front of the lamp, a distance-piece or packing- strip i being fitted in the lower half of the groove. In order to obtain a sharper horizontal shadow, a U-shaped hoop or band may be secured to the front of the lamp. In another construction, Fig. 2, the mirror h is arranged in a forwardly projecting hood m on the lamp. The hood may be continued downwards, so that its lower edge is horizontal. A segmental patch may be silvered or painted on the lamp bulb so as to prevent direct rays from reaching the mirror.
