159,112. Lofts, G. H. May 19, 1920. Electric hand-irons; handles.-Relates to safety devices for preventing overheating. A spindle 16, preferably of copper is screwed into the sole 12 of the iron and heat insulated from the heating element 11 and the insole 10 through which it passes. A pin of soft metal such as zinc is inserted in a transverse hole 20 near the top of the spindle immediately above a disc 17 of asbestos, wood, or like heat and electricity insulating material surrounding the spindle 16. The disc carries a metal plate and lugs 19 normally in contact with carbon or metal blocks in a second asbestos wood disc 14 below it. A spring 22 presses the disc 17 upwards and causes it to shear the pin and break the electric circuit when overheating occurs. The device may be reset by removing a cover 6 and inserting a fresh pin. A supply of pins may be carried in a hollow handle 24.
