16,072. Hopkinson, B. July 5. Stop-gear. - A device for preventing the overheating of internal - combustion engines consists of a plug B having a passage B' normally closed by fusible metal C. When the engine is overheated, the metal is blown out, and the gases escape through holes D1. All the holes except one may be dispensed with, and the escaping gases may sound a whistle or other audible signal. The passage B1 may be large enough to cause the engine to stop, or the escaping gases may move a piston which causes the inlet valve to close or short-circuit the ignition current. A screw-down valve E2 is provided in order that the engine may continue running until it is convenient to renew the fusible metal. Specification 601/09, [Class 7 (ii), Internal-combustion engines, Arrangement &c. of], is referred to.
