Piles; sea and retaining walls. - Concrete pillars or piers f are constructed by driving pairs of iron piles a in line in the direction of the horizontal thrust to be sustained by the structure, and surrounding each pair of piles by concrete, with or without reinforcement between the piles. In the construction of quay or retaining walls, vertical and oblique grooves o, o1 are formed in the concrete of the piers by means of strips attached inside the shuttering use d for casting the concrete, and panelling r, of corrugated iron, timber, ferro-concrete slabs, &c., is inserted in the grooves.
