159,434. Ratinsky, S. April 30, 1920. Portable turning apparatus; filing - machines, reciprocating.-Fig. 1 shows a handdriven watchmaker's lathe or filing-machine, in which the pivot or staff to be machined is held in a chuck 26 mounted on a spindle rotated through gearing 7, 8. The wheel 7 may be driven by an electric or other motor instead of by hand. The file is secured in holder 24 which is pressed upwards against the work by a spring 19 adjusted by a handLe and a rachet device. The vertical movement of the file and consequently the diameter of the finished work is regulated by a stop 47 carried by a lever 43, which is adjusted by a screw 41 provided with an indicator 42. The file-holder is pressed laterally by a spring 29 against a roller 30, and is reciprocated by a lever 15, which is rocked by a connecting-rod from a crank 11, slotted to allow ofstroke-adjustment. The chuck spindle is supported in a plate 31 which is adjustable laterally by a screw 33, so that the position of the chuck with regard to the file can be altered to vary the length of the work filed. Attachments for drilling.-Fig. 3 shows a drilling-attachment which can be secured to the bed of the machine by pins 50. 51 and a screw 49 and nut, after the filing details have been removed. The work, say a wheel, 59, is held by a spring- pressed arm 55 in a holder 57, and a drill is fixed in the chuck 26. The work is pressed towards the drill by a spring 53, the depth of the hole being shown by an indicator 64 moving over a scale 60. In a modification the lever 15 is actuated by the crank directly.
