A process for the production of crotonic acid from croton aldehyde

Crotonic acid is prepared by oxidizing crotonaldehyde in the presence of a manganic salt as catalyst at ordinary temperature. In an example, the catalyst is prepared by mixing a solution of manganous acetate in glacial acetic acid with permanganate and largely diluting the product with glacial acetic acid. The solution is placed in a water-cooled vessel provided with a stirrer, crotonaldehyde is gradually added, and a current of oxygen led in. Finally the acetic acid is distilled off and the solid crotonic acid purified. Specification 7418/14 is referred to.
