Hooks, safety.-A safety hook, fairlead, &c. for use with ropes, cords, electric cables, &c. is formed from a single piece of metal wire, glass, celluloid, &c. It comprises two legs a secured to a base-plate d, two rams-horn loops b formed by bending the legs upon themselves, and a nose c pointing away from the plane of the legs and loops. A flat spring f may press against the nose c to prevent accidental displacement of the rope &c. e. Modifications in which the base-plate is dispensed with and the ends of the legs are bent to form eyes, and in which a pulley is fixed to the nose c are described. The rope &c. is passed over the nose and pulled taut when it enters the loops b.
